Podcast Episode 007:The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of our First 9 Months {and first 500K}

Do you spend too much time making things juuuuust right before you put them out there?

I struggle to this day trying to get over my perfectionism paralysis.

It began when I invested $5,000 for my website before I even officially “started” my business.

This was a HUGE investment for me.

We laid out an initial brand, and my website became the biggest thing I was concerned with.

Here’s where the mistake happened. I wanted to make sure I never experienced website shame and I could come out the gate running.

I signed the initial contract on August 5th, paid my first payment on August 12, and my website wasn’t done until MARCH of the next year because it was completely custom.

Seven months were wasted just because I was consumed with having a perfect website. I lost 7 months of foundation for my website.

Get something out there rather than delay for perfection.

That’s just one of the many lessons I learned during my first 9 months of business.

So listen to Episode 007 and hear more of the first year hurdles I had to face. I’m sure we have similar stories….

In this episode, you’ll learn

  • How building a foundation for your business starts long before you open the doors to your first clients
  • My pre-business phase fell into four categories: How do I start? What do I really want to provide for my customers? How do I create revenue and how do I actually launch this business?
  • Why hiring a coach turned out to be an exceptional investment for me (and can be for you too)
  • Trying to be too perfect with my initial website delayed me 7 whole months, and cost me valuable time in creating the foundation for my business
  • When starting any business, you really need one core product that you will refine down to make exceptional
  • There are three crucial steps to building an online course, including a massive “brain dump”, creating a flow chart and beta testing the first version
  • Why you need to be really cautious with who you’re investing in when putting out cash early on
  • There are 6 critical lessons I learned in doing my first webinars and beta test
  • What key improvements I made when doing my first “real” launch and still more lessons I learn to keep perfecting the launch process
  • There is almost always money being left on the table when pricing product – be confident about your value

Crash & Learns are where I interview an entrepreneur about a time that they probably don’t want to talk about – a total business failure.

This week, I’m talking with James Wedmore, an online business coach and mentor {mine, in fact!} who has seen it all when it comes to business struggles.

Listen in on Episode 7 and you’ll learn

  • How James started his very first business and then jumped into an online video training business (that evolved into different sectors)
  • Why he had 3-4 years of slow growth before he could get a result
  • What James struggled with the most as he was building other areas of his business and how it enables him to help people get results faster with their businesses
  • What James noticed is the number one thing that people struggle with (hint – it really prevents business growth)

Podcast Episode 005: 5 Steps to a $104,000 Promotion {On a Budget}

When I had multiple businesses, I was constantly running promotions.

Some would last a month, some would last 6 weeks. There was no rhyme or reason why I was promoting something except to get people in the door.

But promotions are SO much work and I just had enough.

In 2012, we decided no more pushing, promoting, selling all the time.

We wanted to use scarcity to our advantage so only allowed for 3 promotions a year. Not only did we do less amount of promotions, but we also ran them for shorter amount of time.

And the result? Multiple 6 figure sales.

What we discovered was that we would build so much momentum and customers had a really strong sense of missing out. People came rushing through our doors!

Want to hear how we structure our promotions for this level of success?

Listen to Episode 005: 5 Steps to Planning a 6 Figure Promotion

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • How to pull customers in the door using scarcity without feeling sleazy. Scarcity is the #1 reason people buy so you better use it!
  • What my formula is to find small smaller layers of expectations to determine how many new clients you need to reach to get to your revenue goal. No more random actions. I want to empower you to take intentional action.
  • Why it’s important to track what percentage of your advertising is coming from which medium. There are so many tools that we have at our disposal today can help us do just that.
  • How important recognitions and rewards are for your staff and how it boosts productivity. This can happen a variety of ways – not just money.
