The 2020 ‘State of the Studio’

Team Studio Grow has been super busy this year.

The first time we heard about COVID was wayyy back in January when our Asian clients started sending us emails by the dozens about ‘this one virus….’

Since then, we’ve been observing, analyzing, and crunching numbers. Working in 34 countries gave us a unique perspective of being able to see how nations dealt with the pandemic in different ways – from laissez-faire approaches to decidedly stricter measures.

We gathered all of that data and intel into something we like to call ‘State of the Studio.’

State of the Studio is somewhat of an annual tradition for Studio Grow. Every year, we sit down and review the year that’s just passed, organize our observations and information into neat little reports, and share them internally with our clientele in presentations and exclusive meetings.

This year, we wanted to take the ‘State of the Studio’ public.

Because 2020 isn’t just like any other year.

And we figured State of the Studio needed to be out there so it can help as many owners as possible.

So, welcome to the first public State of the Studio – 2020 Edition. 🎉🎉🎉

We hope this is the first of many!

In today’s SoS, I’ll be sharing our takeaways for boutique fitness this year, including the definitive ups we’ve seen and 7 challenges still plaguing boutique fitness owners today.

If you want to walk into 2021 confident that you have a finger on the pulse of this industry and take away some key tips for your business, this is the episode for you!

In this episode, you will learn:

Christa Gurka and the Digital Product (Part 2)

2020 has shown us that digital services are an even playground.

Gone are the days when digital business was a pie that only giants like Peloton could eat from.

Anyone can go digital.

And anyone can benefit from it.

On the flip side, standing out in the digital space is harder than ever before.

Which is why we need role models who can help us get there.

Christa Gurka, founder and CEO of Pilates in the Grove, is exactly that.

Christa has been putting out top-notch digital content for years now, be it on-demand mat classes or incredible teacher training programs.

And in today’s episode, she talks about her digital products, her approach to digital, the importance of a teacher training program and more!

Remember y’all, digital isn’t some far off dream. It’s something that you CAN put to use right now!

In this episode, you will learn:

  • The unique approach Christa has taken with the digital strategy for her business, and what excites her so much about it
  • What their teacher training is about, plus why she initially created it
  • The ways Christa’s online teacher training is improving the experience for her clients in the studio
  • Things to consider in terms of teacher compensation and the studio owner’s profit
  • How to bring your team in and see the opportunities they have available with you
  • What keeps Christa up at night as a business owner right now, and what she’s doing about it
  • Strategies for launching on demand services on a limited budget, and so much more…

Christa Gurka and the Case for Organic Growth (Part 1)

Your first step as a studio owner doesn’t have to be a big, impressive spectacle complete with fanfare and the works.

It doesn’t have to take years of planning, massive financial backing, and pages and pages of business plans to finally get you moving.

Meticulous planning is great and the discipline in it is definitely something that’ll come in handy in your business.

But sometimes, it can hinder more than help.

The more you plan, the more knowledge you gather about the industry, and the more you micromanage your future business, the more scared you get.

And it might stop you from starting at all.

I think there’s a case to be made for slow, organic growth. For perhaps jumping before you’re ready, starting your business, and then growing along with your studio.

And that’s exactly how today’s guest, Christa Gurka, started her journey in boutique fitness.

Now the CEO and founder of Pilates in the Grove, Christa had an unconventional start to her business career. A physical therapist by degree, she worked in a physical centre that did pilates-based rehab and was able to open her own 300 sq.ft pilates studio as an extension of her clinic.

And when she did, she knew absolutely nothing about running a business.

However, she learned along the way.

And my my, did she learn. This episode is FILLED with her advice from everything from mindset to hiring and I found myself nodding in agreement to everything she said.

If you need that push to get over your fears and open the business you’ve been dreaming about, this first episode in a two-part series with Christa is right up your alley!

In this episode, you will learn:

  • How Pilates in the Grove was formed and the motivation behind the idea for Christa
  • Why she feels that starting small and growing organically is the best long-term approach for building a business
  • What happened when Christa started to let go of control and shifted her mindset
  • Her best tips for hiring, what they are focusing on now as a team and so much more…

With grit & gratitude,

Lisé

Samantha Kellgren and Striking a Balance

You lead such a healthy life …

You’re so disciplined and motivated …

I’m in awe of how high your willpower is …

Those of us in the fitness industry probably constantly hear this from relatives and friends.

They’re always meant as compliments and they fuel you with the motivation you need to keep up with your low calorie, high exercise lifestyle.

But, when do you know if you’ve gone too far?

For our guest Samatha Kellgren, founder of Simply Well Coaching, the awakening came when she realized she’d lost her period.

An avid runner, Samatha took her love for the sport seriously, running 12 miles almost every day while still living on a calorie restrictive diet.

It got to the point where she would run her 12 miles before a long flight or immediately after a stomach flu, just to avoid the feeling of intense guilt she’d get if she missed a day of working out.

And then one day, a female doctor she met at an event listened to her story, heard how she’d lost her period, and pre-diagnosed her with Hypothalamic amenorrhea, a medical condition where intense exercise causes extreme irregularities to your menstrual cycle.

After going through multiple rounds of IVF and working to regain her period, Samantha made it her mission to help women transform rigid relationships with their bodies to ones of love and acceptance.

Y’all, this episode hits close to home for me for many reasons and my chat with Samantha is so important right now.

So, I hope you feel as moved and inspired as I did!

In this episode, you will learn:

  • Samantha’s background and the struggles she faced with her hormones and cycle
  • How she got introduced to running and the way she began coaching others
  • Why Samantha says that mindset is the single most important part of living a healthy lifestyle
  • What are some of the most common unhealthy habits people have around exercise, and the most common lies she hears concerning diet
  • How a person’s cycle is really all about exercise and nutrition
  • The stigma that exists around physical appearance in the fitness world, and why this is so damaging
  • Practical steps for people struggling to find a healthy food and exercise balance

With grit & gratitude,

Lisé
