Podcast Episode 95: Stop Being a Slave to Your Hourly Rate

We’re going to go back in time to my 20 year-old self.

I was looking to get into sales, finance or even medical school and one of my professors gave me some advice that’s stuck with me.

She asked me, “What’s the maximum earning potential in each of these career fields?”

I was caught off guard as I had never thought about having maximum potential.

I always thought the sky was the limit because I was gifted with ideas, thoughts and plans!

She continued to then explain that each of those career fields probably has a maximum threshold on what you’re going to be able to earn.

I really sat down and took a hard look at what I really wanted. I didn’t want to be pigeon-holed. I want to be able to set my own limits. And they’re not going to be dictated by an employer or career-field.

I want to reach MY maximum potential not what my career sets for me or what a job dictates.

This mindset is very much why I started my first company a year later.

So my first business was in front end web design for some huge projects like Mass.gov, which was this huge $88 million web portal.

As I was negotiating our rates to be subcontracted for this project, I had to decide what our max hourly rate would be. I realized how grateful I was that I was building a team right away. It wasn’t just for me, it was for my team.

That maximum earning potential that may have been at $100 got multiplied by 4 or 5 times because of my team. It made for a very powerful place.

I got a glimpse at maximum earning potential inside a service-based business didn’t have to be solely dictated by an hourly rate.

It was a total reframe and I really want you to experience it as well.

Listen into Episode 095 and you’ll learn:

  • How and when I knew it was a time to reframe my way of charging for my services
  • Why setting a standard hourly rate is limiting your earning potential
  • Why your average client monthly value is THE single most important number in your business
  • Why customer commitment matters!
  • How I learned to “hire right”
  • What is the attitude of your business?
  • Why I look at the sale process as an education process

Podcast Episode 94: Selena Soo Part Two

Have you ever wondered what kind of publicity you should go after?

What outlets should you target? Should you consider TV or radio?

Once you know this, it helps narrow your options and get really focused with your publicity efforts.

So ask yourself these few questions –

What are your business goals?

What are you looking to do with this publicity?

Figure out if you’re looking to sell a book or get high paying clients.

That’s going to affect the publicity type you should be going after.

There are four main publicity types that Selena touches on:

  1. Guest Posts/Opinion Editorials – pieces where you are writing the full piece
  2. Podcast Interviews – space and time to share your ideas through conversation
  3. Magazines – huge prestigious perspective for books or accessible price points
  4. TV – big authority move to be interviewed by personalities and anchors

If you’re looking to sell high-ticket offers, Guest Posts and Podcast Interviews are the way to go.

If you’re looking to sell to a mass audience, Magazines and TV are going to be your best bets.

This is not to say that if you are selling high-ticket offers, magazines can’t help you with that. Those other options just have a higher chance of conversion for you.

  • What can guest posts do for you if you are a thought leader
  • How podcast interviews can be a more personal way to show your personality to potential clients

Podcast Episode 92: Selena Soo Part One

I’m so excited to be sharing with you one of the top publicity experts in our space, Selena Soo.

When it comes to publicity, I never recognized the power of it early on. I grew my businesses pretty organically.

So it wasn’t until a few years into our business that we could leverage publicity in such powerful ways to gain influence and build enormous amounts of revenue.

It’s one of the pieces that gets left out of the puzzle for a lot of small business owners.

Third party endorsements can help build your authority and really be seen as credible.

I know for me one of the biggest reasons I didn’t hop onto the publicity bandwagon was some serious mindset blocks.

Who am I to put myself out there?

Am I ready to be on camera?

Do I have a story that people want to listen to?

So many fears that really delayed me from diving into this sooner. And if I was going to change one thing, it would be to rectify this mindset issue earlier.

I’ve discovered that there are hundreds of publicity opportunities available to you as a small business owner every day.

Don’t pressure yourself to be perfect with the best website and best everything else.

You have a message as an expert that needs to be heard.

So listen into Episode 092 and you’ll learn:

  • The difference between advertising and publicity
  • Why mindset held me back initially
  • How guest posts and podcasts interviews will really help you get started
