I’m breaking out of the prison of Pinterest Perfectionism.

I’m going to walk you back to when I was 11 years old. My favorite days were when the postman would drop off another round of magazines and catalogs.

And my favorite was the J. Crew catalog.

It truly was the epitome of perfection to me. I might’ve been a little bit young, but man I would see every model, set layout and just think, “What if this was my life?”

Through the years, that obsession with perfection moved onto reading Us Weekly to now….Pinterest.

Pinterest is truly my weakness. I am immediately inspired.

Although after awhile, I noticed after an hour of Pinterest, I didn’t feel excited. I started to feel a little deflated. I would get off of Pinterest wondering why my life didn’t look as good as other people’s.

Should you take the time to cash in on an already built brand or move forward with your own brand?

I was recently on a phone call with a dynamic woman who was concerned about investing in a franchise or move out on her own.

It’s a scary topic – I know that because I’ve actually been part of a franchise and I’ve run my own businesses. I’ve seen both sides of this coin and there are pros and cons to each one.

From her aspect, her fear was, “Am I going to get left behind by a brand that’s going to be so big and so strong that I won’t be able to compete?”

We all want to be the competition killers in our markets.

It led me to say what are the pros and cons – if I were to go back and do it all over again, would I go the franchise route or move out on my own?

What are the questions I need to answer? What nuances must I know regarding franchises?

Do you remember a time when someone broke your trust?

This could’ve been a family member or someone from your team.

No matter who it was, you can feel the hurt it’s caused.

It makes me wonder when it’s going to happen again, how I’m going to handle it and how badly it’s going to impact me.

I can honestly say that learning how to deal with trust that’s been shaken is something I’ve had to spend a lot of time learning to do in our business.

I’m a very flawed CEO in many ways. People who work with me is that I’ve got great creativity and great instincts, but I’m imperfect in many many areas.

Same with the folks on my team.

They are hired based on their great strengths and we start businesses based on our strengths.

We are also dealing with strong weaknesses. There’s no such thing as perfect.

Each new person you add on to your team is going to bring both their strengths and weaknesses into the mix, making it difficult to manage the dynamic.

Early in my business, I didn’t have the best selection process. I hired EVERYONE. And it led to some very poor hires along the way. They didn’t come into my business with the same intentions I had. I think that’s first and foremost with where trust starts.

You are same on the same page as to why this business matters.
