I hear this mindset problem over and over and over again with my clients and entrepreneurial friends.

“Lisa, I’m so good at knowing my product. I’m so good at knowing my client. I’m so good at understanding the numbers behind this. I maybe even understand my marketing, but I just suck at sales.”

I will look at them and they are truly talented people. I can see what they can’t, which is that they are amazing educators. People who can teach their clients anything. That’s all you really need when it comes to sales.

Something is just holding them back.

And it reminds me of my college graduation. I graduated and moved right away up to Boston Massachusetts. I thought I was going to move forward with getting my masters, but decided to take a leap into the real world instead.

When I made that decision, I was given the advice to get some sales experience because I would need it in the real world. (Always good to trust your 21 year old friends….)

I took a sales job into a low-end technical industry and found that in the very first time in my life, I faced failure.

It wasn’t across the board. My clients that were CTOs had me at the top of the sales leader board every time. But if I just went out to cold call and sell products, I just couldn’t do it.

I actually left that job after about 8 months and started my first company. And I felt like I can do everything I need to do, just don’t ask me to sell. It just wasn’t in my “wheelhouse.”

That was very similar to how my clients were feeling.

Listen into Episode 082 and you’ll learn:

    • Why it is so important to educate your clients
    • Sales is NOT about being an epic persuader!
    • Why one of the most pivotal part of sales is asking questions
    • What is the one crucial foundation of sales?
    • Why save your sales for the end?

Crash & Learns are where I interview an entrepreneur about a time that they probably don’t want to talk about – a total business failure.

This week, I’m talking to Jess Larsen, founder of Myelin Advisors and charity Child Rescue, who is a multifaceted entrepreneur like most of us.

He goes through quite the entrepreneurial roller coaster so you’ll want to tune in and hear how he overcame it.

Listen in on Episode 081 and you’ll learn

      • How Jess first learned that he could be comfortable making a living by obtaining a degree OR he could be highly successful becoming an entrepreneur (if he had the guts to take the leap)!
      • How Jess was able to overcome major unfortunate circumstances when he was first starting out with his young family
      • Why Jess chose to get a job to learn about money and where that led him
      • How Jess decides who to do business with and who not to partner with
      • How Jess was able to focus on making himself a better person, boss and husband…
      • Your clients (and potential clients) can feel the confidence that you have in your business and can sense that you are their to serve – and not to just sell

I’m going back in time, y’all. Eleven years to be exact to when I was in my first year of business after I got married.

I hit a problem that we all struggle with where month after month, my expenses were bigger than my revenue.

And I was wondering, “When on earth would I finally see a profit?”

Now, back then, I wasn’t known for keeping the most beautiful P&Ls. Mine were looking like a barely readable ledger. But even though they didn’t look as wonderful as they do now, one thing was certain: my revenue was growing.

The business was doing some serious numbers for what we were and maxing out its potential.

However, one problem – I had all the expenses that came with that.

And since I was so focused on how the revenue was coming in, I just assumed that we always had things covered. I just thought it was fine to pay for whatever my heart was content to spend money on.

I’m definitely one of those people who will tell you to buy it if we go shopping, and the same thing was happening in my business.

Some of those expenses were great, like hiring a great team. And some of them weren’t so great like training for me, my team, new technology, a new website, and things I just didn’t need.

I saw those numbers keeping going up and I just felt like I had license to spend. I had this mentality if I didn’t spend this, I’m just going to have to pay taxes on it.

Until it hit me – I wasn’t making any money. I was investing this into everything else. And if my sole reason was to not pay any taxes, I was doing a great job. But that’s not what I wanted.

So I started taking a very different approach…

Listen into Episode 080 and you’ll learn:

        • Why it is important to carve your paychecks from the earnings of your business
        • How I was able to identify the cuts that needed to be made in my business- while still staying true to what I wanted my role in my business to be
        • How I discovered budgeting at a young age and how I apply that to my businesses today

There are two reasons why I decided to stop shopping for the cheapest leads.

When I got started marketing my business, I wanted to be exposed to as many people as possible.

I wanted everyone to know me, see me, want to work with me!

I embraced the more is more approach, as in the more people who heard me, the more chances for my brand to stick along with more abilities to really really grow this business.

It meant that I had tons of people coming to me, but really weren’t the right fit for my business.

This results in a waste of marketing dollars.

And when I started looking at my numbers, I thought there’s got to be a better way.

My team was wasting so much time weeding out the wrong people.

We really wanted to find that IDEAL person.

So listen into Episode 079 and you’ll learn:

          • Why I invested in higher priced marketing, instead of looking for the cheap deal!
          • How I was spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on marketing and attracting people who weren’t the right fit for my business
          • How I discovered “less is more”
          • How to calculate your Average Lifetime Client Value
          • How to map out your revenue sources and how to understand their thresholds
