Highlighting Voices of Color in Boutique Fitness: Meet Misty of Dragonfly Pilates

I’ve spent the last week watching as protests erupted across the United States and have moved worldwide with the purpose of ending racism and shining light on some very uncomfortable truths.  Our world of boutique fitness is filled with dance, song, celebration and movement:  it’s also overwhelmingly filled with white people, white voices and white ideas.

We’re acknowledging there is a problem and taking action.  Our mission has always been to further the success of entrepreneurs and innovators within the boutique fitness space.  To take immediate action, we’re donating to the Swan Dreams Project and Black Girls Code.  While the immediate needs are to address the

needs of those suffering injustice today, we want to invest long term in the education and futures of young black dancers, coders, dreamers, doers and professionals.  Their success is essential to long term change.

In lieu of our planned email and schedule podcast, we’ll be highlighting the incredible Women of Color who have shared their stories and voices on Ready. Aim. Empire, beginning with Misty Lynne Cauthen.

What can I say about Misty, other than she’s one of my favorite people and one of the most recognizable faces of Studio Grow.  Misty is also the amazing studio owner of Dragonfly Pilates and her story is one for the ages.  Her voice is powerful (and hilarious…SNL take note) and she has a lot of wisdom to share.

Follow her on Instagram HERE and LinkedIn HERE.

We hope you join us in listening, learning and sharing the incredible People of Color in boutique fitness.

Regardless of whether you’re donating, dancing, listening, protesting, moving or dreaming up how to invoke change — together we can make our industry and the world around us a better place.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • How seasons of turmoil led to incredible opportunities for Misty
  • The reasons she know she wanted to open more than one studio {and how that model has changed over the years when it comes to hiring}
  • Her biggest challenges with opening her second studio
  • How a work relationship changed Misty’s mindset and moved her business forward

Where do I go from here?

Y’all, today is a deep breath day.

These past few weeks, our world has been turned upside down.

And one of our biggest challenges has been getting our brick and mortars back on track.

I truly understand why governments are being cautious. I have an autoimmune disease myself, so flattening the curve is extremely important to me.

That being said, at Studio Grow, we want to make sure that as reopening guidelines are made, we’re proceeding with a fair assessment of what businesses should reopen and when.

We founded the Boutique Fitness Coalition with that in mind. We wanted to make sure boutique fitness studios weren’t being lumped together with fitness centres and cinemas with 250+ capacities.

At the end of the day, we’re different from large gyms and just as safe as spas, salons, and barbershops.

And we wanted to make sure we got that message out there to governors, mayors, legislators, and to anyone who’d listen.

Y’all, we’ve had some incredible success in select states. People did listen and changes were made.

But for every state that we saw success in, we had a new state pop up where guidelines got stricter and reopening deadlines were being pushed back.

So today’s episode is for all owners struggling with reopening and where there seems to be no end in sight.

Join me as I break down the four steps of who you should be speaking to, how you should structure your arguments for reopening, and why local media is your most powerful tool during this time.

This isn’t just helpful to reopen now, but also to make sure you stay open during the second wave of closures in the fall/winter seasons.

Remember y’all, we’re all in this together.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • What we’d like to see as the world re-opens for business
  • The major hole in the market that we wanted to address by creating the Boutique Fitness Coalition
  • Why starting local is your best chance of getting open {and what this means}
  • How you can leverage local media and state legislators in your efforts to re-open
  • The 3 things to focus on and what really differentiates boutique fitness studios from other fitness facilities

Rick Stollmeyer and the Future of Wellness

There’s no getting around it – we’re in a brand new age of wellness.

And it’s terrifying, exciting and energizing all at the same time.

No one understands that better than Rick Stollmeyer, CEO of Mindbody, who stopped by to chat about our new pandemic reality and what it means for the future of the wellness industry.

Despite our conversation touching on the fear and uncertainty of these times, it isn’t all glum.

Rick mentions that the biggest change he’s seeing in the industry right now is the incredible innovation taking place in our studio spaces (both physical and virtual) despite COVID-19 hitting us like a thunderbolt.

Y’all, both of us are incredibly optimistic about the future of our industry and are proud of all we’ve managed to accomplish so far.

In today’s episode, Rick touches on the essentialism of the services of the wellness industry, how we’re entering a new wave of fitness, why digital storefronts are an essential part of our business model now, and the concept of tribe and safety.

Not only are Rick’s observations and forecasts extremely informative, they’re also important. They’re a vital reminder that not everything is dull and demoralizing.

There’s a lot to be excited about and a lot we can still need to work towards.

So grab a cup of coffee and listen in, y’all need this!

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • What Rick has been seeing lately during this exciting (and terrifying) times for the industry
  • Where he sees things 5 years from now
  • How to maximize the effectiveness of a digital studio during these times, and moving forward
  • Rick’s thoughts on the important relationships between employers, insurance companies and governments
  • The huge opportunities that exist for operators in our space and who he believes will ultimately succeed

Studio Reopening: Adapting is the name of the game

I start off today’s episode with a huge grin on my face as we finally start talking about studio reopening.

And, yes ya’ll, not only will each studio vary by location but you will also have specific regulations to be aware of during this phase. But, if there is one thing we all share, it is knowing that the way you reopen will ensure the security of your business for the long-term.

By taking a look at your studio’s processes and protocols, we’ll answer your question of ‘How can I safely reopen my studio?’ and build your action plan.

Without further ado, allow me to jump right into the major points of our Studio Reopening Guide and how to welcome your clients back through thoughtful, careful actions that serve the health of others.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • Why the next few months, and reopening the best way possible, is so critical
  • What all business owners should be aiming for when reopening
  • The health, sanitation and spatial protocols to be aware of
  • Additional team and client protocols to consider
  • How you can get a copy of our reopening guide to help you in this process
